I am guilty, just as most parents are of “loosing focus” when photographing my their children. I get excited by the emotional exchange while being submersed in the moment and lose sight of “technicalities” of a successful photograph.
Unfortunately, when a viewer looks at his photograph the “technicalities” distract from the emotional connection and weaken the overall compelling effect.
In the example below (a photograph I recently took of my wife and son) I didn’t notice Adam’s bright white socks with an overwhelming “PUMA” brand. Let me know if you find the socks as distracting as I do.

Several weeks ago I spent a day with an amazing young family on the Upper East Side documenting a new chapter in their life – arrival of a wonderful baby Lucas. It just so happens that Lucas has an older sister who is not only beautiful but also relentless. I had a lot of fun chasing after her with my camera and occasionally I was able to catch her standing still just long enough .. Here’s a sneak preview:
